How can I train my cat to be less aggressive when eating?

Odysseus (Odin) is a 2yr old flame-point/american short-hair mix and joined our family less than a month ago. We only provide wet food and each cat is fed on their own plate, in a separate part of the house. Odin will wait for the others to receive their dish but once it's his turn, he growls in anticipation and tries to knock the dish out of my hand. Tonight I couldn't even place it down before he had knocked all of the food across the floor! What can I do? Reprimanding him just irritates him further. Other than during mealtime, he's an extremely docile and affectionate guy.
