Was John McCain REALLY that good in the Rick Warren forum?

Based on what I've read, McCain had a collection of sound bites that sounded good, but didn't really answer questions, merely sounded like answering questions when done with a bravado. Plus McCain had the advantage of going 2nd, a big advantage in this setting, as he could have a better anticipation of the questions to be asked
